To use the Young and Old CD-ROM, you need a multimedia PC with a CD-ROM drive and a sound card installed. While the CD-ROM is optimised for a PC, you can also use it on a Macintosh (Mac). Table 1 defines the type of PC that you should have and Table 2 defines the type of Mac that you should have.
Note: you do not need an Internet connection to use the Young and Old CD-ROM.

Note: it is essential that you have the correct version of either browser. Click here for information on how to check your browser version. You do not need an Internet connection to use the Young and Old CD-ROM. Some Online activities for the senior classes require an Internet connection, but you can complete the majority of the activities without an Internet connection.
Note, however, that these lessons are also available on the Web site of the National Council on Ageing and Older People.

Make sure that your PC meets the minimum specifications defined in Table 1. To start using the CD-ROM, insert the Young and Old CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive on your computer. If you have a Web browser installed on your PC, the opening screen or home page of the programme is displayed automatically.
If, because of some settings on your PC, the home page of Young and Old is not displayed, you can access it manually. If you close the browser while viewing Young and Old, you can access it again manually.

When you are sure that your Mac meets the minimum specifications described in Table 2, you are ready to start using the Young and Old CD-ROM, as follows:

You access Young and Old using a Web browser. This means that you are using the skills that you use when browsing the Internet. If you have not used a Web browser before to access the Internet, you may find this section useful.
The home page (that is, the first screen displayed when you start the CD-ROM) allows you to go to the different sections of the learning programme. On the home page, there are six pictures, called icons, with labels. Move your pointer over one of the icons, and notice that the pointer changes shape, usually from an arrow symbol to a hand symbol. Throughout the CD-ROM, whenever you see a hand symbol, you can click on the picture or the words to which you are pointing to go to another section of the CD-ROM.
Use the six main icons on the home page as follows:
Take a few minutes to practise moving around the CD-ROM by clicking on the icons, on underlined text, and on other links.

To find a lesson, for example, Care and share for third and fourth class, do the following:

Click on the Teachers' Corner icon on the home page to go to the Teachers' Corner, which provides specific information for teachers. The first page of the Teachers' Corner introduces the CD-ROM. Notice that the four levels in the primary school are displayed on the left-hand side of the page. Click on the level of your choice, for example, 1st + 2nd Class. An introduction to the level that you have chosen is displayed.
Notice that the seven themes are displayed on the left-hand side of the page. Read the introduction to the level, or click on a theme to go to the lesson plan for that theme for the level that you have chosen.

Point the mouse to the title Overview to … and click the mouse button. Press the Page Down or Page Up button to move through the lesson plans. Notice that when you move the mouse over the left-hand side of the screen, you can also click the text there, for example, Overview, Curriculum Links. Click on these text labels to move to a particular section of the lesson plan.
Click on the last text label, Children's Area, to move to the Online activities for the children. If you jump to the children's area, click on Teacher at the top of any page to move back to the lesson plan.

To print a lesson plan, do the following:

The page breaks are controlled by the browser that you are using. It is not currently possible to predetermine in the HTML coding where the page breaks occur nor can you fix poor page breaks when printing. Therefore, unfortunately, when you print a lesson plan, you may find a heading at the end of a page and the associated text on the next page.

When you print a lesson plan, you may find that the icons at the top of the web page and/or the labels at the side of the web page are printing on separate pages. Before you choose begin to print a lesson plan, make sure that you position the mouse pointer on the heading of the lesson plan and that you click the mouse button. This selects the text of the lesson plan only for printing and additional pages should not print.
If you are using Internet Explorer and continue to experience problems having clicked on the heading of the lesson plan, choose File and Print. Make sure that the Only the selected frame is selected in the Print Frames section of the Print dialog box.

For Netscape Navigator, click the Help menu on the toolbar, and select About Communicator. For Internet Explorer, click the Help menu on the toolbar, and select About Internet Explorer. The version number is displayed.

New versions of Netscape and Internet Explorer are released regularly. You can get the latest version of a Web browser from the Internet. For Netscape Navigator, go to the Netscape Web site at the following URL: http://www.netscape.com. For Internet Explorer, go to the Microsoft Web site at the following URL: http://www.microsoft.com
However, for your convenience, Netscape version 4.7 has been copied to the Young and Old CD-ROM, which you can install on a PC or on a Mac. However, be aware that Netscape does not provide support for products installed from such a CD-ROM.
To install Netscape Version 4.7 from the Young and Old CD-ROM on a PC or on a Mac, do the following

The Young and Old CD-ROM is a teaching resource that you can adapt to suit your classroom environment. You can use the CD-ROM on a computer outside of your classroom, and print out the lesson plans and worksheets to use in the classroom.

To print a worksheet, do the following:
If you do not have access to a photocopier, you can print a copy of the worksheet for every child. Repeat steps 1 to 4. In the Copies section of the Print dialog box displayed, enter the number of copies that you want. Then click on OK.

In some of the worksheets, information is displayed in pop-up windows. Pop-up windows are used to reduce the amount of scrolling that the child is required to do when completing a worksheet.
Notice that on a PC, when a pop-up window is displayed, a button with the name of the pop-up window is displayed on the Windows taskbar. If the pop-up window is open but you can see it, you can click on the button on the Windows taskbar to display the pop-up window again. On a Mac, when the pop-up window goes behind the browser window and cannot be seen fully, click on the pop-up window to bring it into view again.
You can print the data in the pop-up windows as follows:

You can copy the contents of the CD-ROM to your computer and you will then be able to use the learning programme without inserting the CD-ROM. This means that the learning programme can be used at the same time on many computers in a school.
To copy all the content of the CD-ROM to your computer, you need 200 MB of free disk space.

If you do not have sufficient disk space and you teach a senior class, do not copy all of the sound files from the CD-ROM to your hard disk. Look at the LESSONS/AUDIO directory. Copy only the files in the LESSONS/AUDIO/GENERAL directory.

If the quality of the photographs on your PC is poor, it is likely that your display settings are not the optimal settings for the CD-ROM. To set the display settings on your PC, do the following:

Each page with sound has either a speaker button or a little girl (Emily) - click on the speaker button or on Emily to hear the sound for that page again.

Your computer does not have a sound card. Click OK to the message every time it is displayed. The children will be able to complete the Online activities for the senior classes without sound.

If the installation does not start automatically when you insert the Young and Old CD-ROM, on a PC, follow the instructions for manually starting the CD-ROM outlined here.

If you would like to increase the amount of viewing space you have on your browser, do not display the Standard Buttons or Address Bar on the browser window. For example, using Netscape, choose Hide Navigation Toolbar and Hide Location Toolbar on the View menu. Using Internet Explorer, choose Toolbars on the View menu and then make sure that there is no correct mark beside Standard Buttons and Address Bar.

Each page, except for the main Take a look page, has navigation buttons at the end of the page. If you cannot see them, place the cursor on the arrow pointing downwards in the bottom right-hand corner of the browser window and click on the arrow. You should now see the navigation buttons. In the Take a look page, click on the pictures for more information or click on Have a go or Things to do on the left of the page to move to another part of the Online activities.

Click on a picture with the right-hand mouse button and choose Save picture as or Save image as from the menu displayed. Then, choose a folder on your own computer and save the file. However, you should be aware of copyright issues regarding saving and reusing images on the Internet.
