5. Find out - Older people in print

Find out

Interview a grown-up (parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, neighbour) about a newspaper or magazine they read recently.

Before the interview, make an interview sheet like the one below, using a computer if possible. Write the answers in the "Answer" column during the interview. You may need to discuss the answers with the person you are interviewing before you write them down.

Question Answer
1. What is the name of the newspaper or magazine?
2. When was the newspaper or magazine published?
3. How many articles about older people does it have?
4. How many pictures of older people does it have?
5. Are the older people in the articles helping or being helped?
6. Are there any ads that show older people?

Bring your interview sheet to class and combine the information from all of the sheets into one table, like the following example:

Name and date of issue of newspaper or magazine Number of articles about older people Number of pictures of older people Number of ads showing older people
Irish Independent, December 7th, 1999 3 1 0
Irish Times, December 8th, 1999 2 3 1
Woman's Way, December 1999 2 0 0

Use one of the packages on your computer to make a bar chart or pictogram of this information.
