HousingApril 2009 Older People's Experiences of Housing Exclusion in Ireland: An Exploratory Study Improving the quality of life of older people is a primary concern of the NCAOP. Quality of life research has consistently highlighted the importance of living in a home and neighbourhood that feels safe, facilitates access to local facilities, enhances independence and control over one’s life, and facilitates the retention of a role in society. Therefore the quality, security and location of an older person’s accommodation are key determinants of his/her quality of life. This exploratory study was commissioned by the NCAOP to explore the experiences, perceptions, preferences and needs of older people experiencing housing exclusion. It highlights a range of issues that are critical to the future development of the sector, including: the need for increased capital and revenue funding for voluntary housing providers; and the need for increased input from the Health Service Executive into supportive housing schemes in general.
